1.What story or message did you want to convey through this Raya 2026 collection?

This collection tells a story of quiet beauty, the kind that lives in tradition, craftsmanship, and memory. I wanted each piece to feel like a gentle celebration of heritage, while still allowing the wearer to feel modern, confident, and emotionally connected to what they wear during Raya.

2. The name Gemersik Sanggar is intriguing — what does it mean to you, and how does it reflect the collection’s identity and aesthetic?

To me, Gemersik Sanggar evokes the soft echoes of an artist’s sanctuary, a place where ideas, textures, and emotions come alive. “Gemersik” suggests something subtle yet expressive, while “Sanggar” represents a creative space rooted in culture. Together, they reflect a collection that is delicate, soulful, and deeply inspired by the artistry of our traditions.

3. How does this collection reinterpret traditional Hari Raya attire for the modern wearer, especially considering the cultural significance of Raya fashion?

Rather than altering the essence of traditional silhouettes, I focused on refining them through lighter construction, softer drapes, and thoughtful detailing. The pieces remain respectful of heritage, but are designed to move with the wearer’s lifestyle today: elegant, comfortable, and quietly distinctive.

4. When someone sees a look from this collection what details would make them instantly say, “That’s Zaimi Zulkafli”?

It would be the balance between softness and structure. Delicate embellishments, refined textures, and silhouettes that feel graceful rather than loud. I believe our identity lies in subtle statement pieces, where the craftsmanship speaks before the design does.

5. Can you walk us through some standout pieces or signature details in Gemersik Sanggar that you’re most excited for shoppers to discover?

Some of the highlights include Rintik in Misty Black & Merlot Maroon, organza layers with intricate embroidery selendang, and chunky embellishments on the cekak musang necklines modern interpretations of traditional looks, and silhouettes that feel almost weightless when worn. I was especially excited about Mahogani pieces that combine softness with quiet opulence. We decided to have a different tone on each side of the designs, that feels special without trying too hard.

6. Raya fashion often balances tradition with contemporary style — what design elements or silhouettes in your collection bridge that balance beautifully?

The bridge lies in proportion and material. We kept traditional forms recognizable, but softened the structure and introduced lighter textiles, refined embellishments, and more fluid movement. The goal was to honour tradition while allowing the wearer to feel effortless and current.

7. Color and textile choices are central to festive wear — how did you choose the palette and fabrics for Gemersik Sanggar, and what emotions are you hoping they evoke?

The palette was inspired by calm, nostalgic tones, flowers, and colours that feel intimate rather than dramatic. Fabric choices focused on texture and movement, because I wanted the pieces to evoke warmth, grace, and a sense of quiet celebration rather than spectacle.

8. As an established designer, how has your creative process evolved over the years?

Over time, I’ve learned to design with more intention and less noise. Earlier in my career, I focused on visual impact. Today, I’m more interested in the emotional impact of how a garment feels, how it moves, and how it becomes part of someone’s meaningful moments.

9.In your view, what makes your Raya collection this year unique compared to previous years, and how does Gemersik Sanggar respond to or stand out within current trends?

This collection feels more introspective. Instead of chasing trends, it focuses on timelessness and emotional connection. In a season where fashion can feel overwhelming, Gemersik Sanggar offers something softer, more personal, and quietly luxurious.

10.Looking ahead, what do you hope customers feel or experience when they wear pieces from Gemersik Sanggar during their Raya celebrations?

I hope they feel calm, confident, and beautiful themselves. Raya is about connection, memory, and presence and if our pieces can help someone feel comfortable and meaningful in those moments, then the collection has done its job.
