From picking and purchasing to finally unboxing one, the entire process of owning a blind box builds anticipation and excitement. Whether you manage to pull your anticipated design, score a secret figure in a single attempt, or end up with the same figurine three times in a row (and believe me, that can happen), the allure of blind boxes keeps everyone coming back for more.

What Are Blind Boxes?

A blind box contains a random figurine, securely sealed, with its content remaining a mystery until it’s opened. This unpredictability adds an irresistible element of surprise and thrill to the unboxing experience.

More than just getting a toy, having a blind box itself as an experience. It’s about the suspense, the reveal, and the joy of discovery. And, even as we enter 2025, this trend is far from being just for kids.

In China, the blind box market reached a whopping USD 1.3 billion in 2021, even surpassing assemble toys, according to Statista. To name one, Labubu, which skyrockets in popularity, has everyone proudly showing off their Labubu furry keychains hanging on their bags. While it may reach USD 15 billion by 2026, this blind box craze shows no signs of slowing down.

Pop Mart, a China-based company, has sparked renewed enthusiasm for the blind box trend with their adorable characters like Molly and Dimoo. These figures come in a variety of series and themes, that features ultra-rare “secrets” that drive collectors wild.

In Malaysia, Mifski, Mofusand, and Sonny Angel, with its positively absurd forehead-to-eyeball ratio and stout limbs, have gained significant popularity and continue to capture many hearts (out of my 10 friends, 6 of them own at least one Sonny).

How Does A Blind Box Work?

The key to understanding blind boxes is that you never know exactly what you’re getting. Each toy is individually sealed and packaged, and while buyers can choose a series, they can’t pick a specific figure they want. Thus, people tend to buy a full set to ensure no duplicates, which means these boxes (often in sets of 6) contain no-repeated figures.

Why Do People Love Blind Box?

Blind boxes have fostered vibrant communities where enthusiasts trade figures, bring their Labubu keychains anywhere they go, and share their collections. To be honest, even I have indulged in this trend especially Mofusand (how could anyone resist the adorable cat figurine collections?).

As the trend continues to evolve, it’s clear that blind boxes are much more than toys— they’re a global phenomenon.

Keen in owning one? You can find these cutesy collectible blind boxes are available at Miniso, Kinokuniya and Pop Mart stores across Malaysia. Money can’t buy you happiness, allegedly. But it can definitely buy you a Mofusand hipper!
